The road back to the volleyball court was not simply about returning to a lineup for Chickasha senior Paris Carney. It was about proving to herself that a setback would not define the way her high school career ends.
Carney plays right side and outside hitter for the Fightin’ Chicks, bringing versatility to the front row and a team-first outlook to every match. Her proudest accomplishment is not a single kill, victory or tournament finish. Instead, it is the opportunity to compete again after knee surgery.
“The accomplishment I’m most proud of is being able to get back on the court after having knee surgery,” Carney said.
The experience gave Carney a deeper appreciation for the game and for the teammates who support one another through difficult moments. Volleyball has helped her become more comfortable accepting constructive criticism, a quality that allows athletes to improve without losing confidence. It has also helped her feel free to be herself around the people she considers her closest friends.
Carney was a varsity right-side hitter last season and has continued developing into a more well-rounded player on both offense and defense for Chickasha. As a senior, she brings valuable experience to a program that depends on leadership, communication and trust throughout every rotation.
One teammate who has left a lasting impression on Carney is KK Willard. Carney said Willard believed in her when she struggled to believe in herself and was always willing to listen when she needed someone to talk to.
“That teammate that has left the biggest impact on me was KK,” Carney said. “She always believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.”
Carney’s mother is another central influence in her life. She credits her with showing her how to be a respectful young woman while reinforcing the value of hard work. That example has helped guide Carney through the demands of athletics and school.
She also remembers Mr. Voyles, her seventh-grade teacher, as someone who helped her step outside her comfort zone. He encouraged her to express her feelings, brought positivity to the classroom and helped put a smile on her face.
The best advice Carney has received is simple but meaningful: there is no “I” in team. It is a message that fits the sport she loves, where every point requires players to communicate, cover for each other and trust the next person to do her job.
Carney also offered special appreciation to Chickasha coach Nikki Clay, who she said has believed in her potential and has found ways to make her laugh even when she is frustrated with her performance. Clay remains the program’s head coach.
For Carney, the senior season is a chance to compete with gratitude, encourage those around her and finish her journey with the same determination that carried her back onto the court.
