For Chickasha High School freshman Chyna Carney, volleyball is about much more than the final score. It is about the people beside her on the court, the mindset she brings into every practice and the opportunity to represent her school with pride.

Carney, a ninth grader at Chickasha, is beginning her high school volleyball career with a clear appreciation for the things that make a team special. While big plays and victories are always memorable, one of her favorite parts of the season has been the bond she shares with her teammates.

“The highlight of my season is my teammates and how we get along,” Carney said.

That connection matters to Carney because volleyball is a sport built on communication, trust and encouragement. Every player has a role, and a positive attitude can make a difference in the way a team competes through difficult moments. Carney believes maintaining that attitude has been one of the keys to her own success.

“Something that has taken me to be successful is a good and positive mindset,” she said.

Her faith also serves as a daily source of motivation. Carney said Jesus motivates her, giving her a foundation that reaches beyond athletics and helps guide the way she approaches school, sports and relationships.

Among the people who have inspired her is KK Willard. Carney admires Willard’s upbeat personality and the way she brings joy to those around her.

“She always has a smile on her face and she’s a ray of sunshine,” Carney said.

Carney also credits Coach James with making an impact during her freshman year. His class became something she looked forward to, showing how influential a teacher can be outside the gym as well as on campus.

Competition is another part of the game Carney enjoys, especially when it involves family. Her favorite opponent to beat is her sister, and she also enjoys competing against her sister, Paris Carney, during practices. The sibling matchups bring extra energy because both athletes are naturally competitive.

Away from the court, Carney looks to Nebraska Division I volleyball player Harper Murray as someone she enjoys following on social media. As she continues developing her own game, Carney understands the importance of staying motivated in the classroom and managing her responsibilities.

Representing Chickasha means everything to Carney. She knows colleges notice more than talent, they also look for athletes who compete with respect, character and pride.
