For Chickasha High School senior Kara Hysell, being a varsity cheerleader is about much more than performing in front of a crowd. It is about building relationships, encouraging teammates, and growing into a confident leader.
Hysell said the bond she has developed with her teammates is one of the accomplishments she values most during her cheer career.
“I’m most proud of getting closer with my teammates, and my favorite memory has been UCA camp when we all just worked so well together and had an amazing time.”
That sense of unity has helped shape Hysell’s experience with the program. Cheerleading demands attention to detail, trust among teammates, and the ability to remain composed when a routine does not go as planned. Through those moments, Hysell has gained lessons she plans to carry beyond high school.
“My sport has taught me patience, confidence, and perseverance. Cheer has shown me that improvement takes time and that mistakes help me grow. It has also taught me how to work with others, encourage my teammates, and stay positive even when things get challenging. These lessons have made me a more confident and supportive person both on and off the mat.”
Hysell credits people close to her for providing consistent encouragement. Her favorite teacher is Chickasha coach Miranda Molder, whom she said has influenced her life and supported her family over the years.
“My favorite teacher is Miranda Molder. Not only is she the best coach, but she has had a big impact on my life for many years. She has helped my family in countless ways, and she is just an overall amazing person.”
She also looks to her older sister, Page Hysell, as an example of resilience and ambition.
“My big sister, Page Hysell, inspires me the most. she has gone through so many things and has come out a better person each and every time. From owning her own business that she founded at the age of 17, to now going to school to become a teacher. She’s my biggest role model!”
Teammate Lakiria Abram has also made an impact by offering positivity and humor.
“The teammate that has left the biggest impression on me has been Lakiria Abram. I can’t count how many times she has uplifted me. She’s so full of love and support, and she’s also extremely funny! She brings so much light into my life!”
As Hysell completes her senior season, she carries advice from her mother: “The best advice has been to do what i love no matter what. My mom has always told me that no matter how long something takes, how hard it will be, or how small it is, if i love it then i should pursue it.”
