Lenae Lambrose is learning that progress in cheerleading comes from persistence, preparation, and a willingness to accept feedback.
A sophomore at Chickasha High School, Lambrose fills a variety of roles for the Fightin’ Chicks’ cheer program. Whether the stunt group needs a base, side base, back spot or front spot, she is prepared to step into the position and help the group succeed.
“I play cheer, and I do all positions. Base, side base, back spot, and front spot,” Lambrose said.
That versatility has helped Lambrose build confidence while learning the detailed skills needed in cheer. From stunting technique to school chants and dances, she takes pride in becoming more comfortable with new material and executing it quickly.
“I am proud of learning new skills and getting them done, and learning new chants and dances and getting them down in like a week,” Lambrose said.
Cheerleading demands trust among teammates, especially during stunts. Every athlete has a responsibility to execute her role, communicate clearly, and stay focused on the group. Lambrose said the sport has also taught her an important lesson about receiving coaching and using it as motivation instead of letting it discourage her.
“To take critique, even if it’s kind of harsh; it keeps me aware and to know that I will get better,” Lambrose said.
She credits teammates Lakiria and Kara with giving her an example to follow as she continues developing her own skills. Their ability and work ethic inspire Lambrose to keep improving, while Kara’s character has made a lasting impact on her as a teammate.
“I would say my teammate, Lakiria or Kara, because they’re so good at cheer and I want to be like them, and they inspire me to get better,” Lambrose said.
“Kara, because she’s so sweet and knows how to help and handle things,” Lambrose said.
Lambrose also appreciates the practical advice that comes from learning stunt fundamentals. She pointed to one specific technique that has helped guide her through the challenge of mastering an extension.
“In my sport, we have this thing called extension, and if you can’t get it, go under it and push up,” Lambrose said.
Away from practice, Lambrose said Mrs. Devine has been a memorable teacher because of the positive energy and accountability she brings to the classroom.
“Mrs Devine, because she keeps me on my toes and she keeps me in line, and she’s just so fun to be around,” Lambrose said.
Lambrose also expressed gratitude for the people helping her grow in cheer and beyond.
“I give my shout-out to Kara Hysell for being so nice and teaching me technique. And my family, the Lambrose Family, because they push me so hard,” Lambrose said.
