What does being an involved parent mean? To Dinae Shierling, it means “actively participating in my children’s lives and activities, supporting their interests, and contributing to a sense of community,” she says. Dinae says that an involved parent demonstrates care, dedication, and a genuine commitment to the success and well- being of all of the children that you engage with. Dinae got started with helping out with her children’s sports teams from her love of the game. “As a former college player, my love for the game naturally led me to support my kids in their sports journey,” she says. Her favorite memory as a sports mom was an organizing a team event off of the court. She lived watching them bond, laugh, and create friendships.
It reminded Dinae that sports are about more than just the competition. Her biggest achievement was
launching the Chickasha United Basketball Association in 2019. Dinae says that the program has empowered young athletes, equipping them with the fundamental tools and training to develop a solid foundation. For Dinae, the toughest part about being a sports mom is balancing the needs of her children with her responsibilities, as well as managing time to make it to practices and games, all while making sure that the kiddos are ready physically and mentally for their events. When things get tough, Dinae reminds herself that her efforts can lead to meaningful changes in the athletes lives and help them grow. When there isn’t enough of her to take it all on alone, she has her friends to be there on the journey with her; helping to be there to love and support her kids.
Dinae couldn’t have done it alone. The help of everyone involved in the sports programs have made the goal for the Chickasha United Basketball Association come to life. With a special mention to Sarah Van Ess for all of her hard work and dedication.
