Serenity Golightly – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by: Gerron Smith – Shelter Insurance

By Payton Moody

Serenity Golightly, junior point guard for the Chickasha Lady Fightin’ Chicks basketball team, understands just how impactful being a part of a sports program can be.

“Sports have taught me how to be a good teammate, a leader, how to work through adversity and what it means to work hard,” Golightly said. “I’ve learned commitment, self-discipline, resilience and respect.”

Other than life skills, sports are also where long-lasting relationships can be fostered with players and coaches alike.

“My favorite parts of being on a team are being around people who push you to be a better athlete,” Golightly said. “The friendships you create and the support system you get from them.”

Being a leader is important to Golightly, and she exemplifies this mindset on the court and in the classroom. She has obtained many skills from basketball that will better her not only in sports, but in life.

“One of the most important skills I have gained would be communication,” Golightly said. “Communication will help me voice my opinions and any problems I have in the future.”

However, being a leader can mean many things; Golightly prefers the humanitarian approach.

“I have learned what it takes to be competitive in your sport, and it’s working on and off the court,” Golightly said. “Being friendly is something I have always prided myself on. I’m very approachable and my teammates always come to me for a good laugh or to just talk.”

Outside of sports, Golightly is involved in the Volunteer Club with her high school, the First National Bank Student Board of Directors and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Golightly’s college plans are to play collegiate basketball and major in communications.

“Through my leadership skills, I hope to be able to take control of situations and help guide myself and others in a positive way.”
